Are you considering a Loan in Norway with D number? To apply for a loan in Norway, you must meet several key criteria – not only income requirements. One of the most important conditions is having a permanent personal identification number, known as a fødselsnummer. Find out what to do if you do not have one and whether it is possible to get a loan in Norway in such a situation.
Can I get a loan in Norway with a temporary D number?
Unfortunately, obtaining a loan in Norway without a fødselsnummer is not possible. A permanent personal number, registered address in Norway, a Norwegian bank account, and legal income are the main requirements that determine whether your loan application will be approved.
If you currently have only a D number (temporary personal number), you must first apply for a permanent personal number – a fødselsnummer.
Types of personal numbers in Norway
There are two main types of personal identification numbers in Norway:
- D number – a temporary number assigned to foreign nationals who plan to stay in Norway for less than six months.
- F number (fødselsnummer) – a permanent number assigned to individuals planning to stay in Norway for more than six months.
How to apply for a permanent personal number (F number)?
A fødselsnummer is assigned to individuals who plan to stay in Norway for longer than six months and have an employment contract.
To apply, you must first register your relocation and prepare the following documents:
- completed application form,
- passport or other valid ID,
- employment contract longer than six months,
- rental agreement or property purchase contract,
- residence registration confirmation from UDI.
If you do not yet have a D number, you must also apply for a tax card.
Once you receive your fødselsnummer, you must inform your bank and other relevant institutions about the change from D number to F number.
Where should you submit the application?
You cannot apply online. You must appear in person at:
- Skatteetaten (Norwegian Tax Administration), or
- SUA – Service Center for Foreign Workers.
It is recommended to book an appointment in advance.
Why is it worth applying for a fødselsnummer?
A permanent personal number provides significantly more benefits than a temporary D number. These include:
- the ability to officially register your residence in Norway,
- access to loans in Norway as a private individual or business owner,
- easier opening of a bank account,
- the possibility to apply for credit and debit cards,
- access to public healthcare,
- the ability to handle administrative matters online.
Without a fødselsnummer, a Loan in Norway with D number is not granted.
How long does it take to receive a fødselsnummer?
The average processing time is approximately six weeks. However, this period may vary depending on the number of applications being processed.
Once approved, your fødselsnummer will be sent to you by post.
Having a permanent personal number opens many opportunities and allows you to fully participate in Norwegian society. For many people, it is essential when applying for a loan in Norway, whether for a home purchase, a car, or other financial needs.
